EEEV & VEEEV are mosquito borne viral pathogens that appear mostly North and South America. Horses, donkeys and zebras are usually affected with encephalomyelitis being the leading symptom. In rare cases these viruses are transmissible to humans. In 2016, Zika-related microcephaly was declared a public health emergency, due to the causal link between the virus and congenital malformations being confirmed. While the disease numbers have decreased since, transmission persists, and calls for treatment and vaccine options.
