Applies to general travel items but not to medically necessary liquids or research materials when properly declared. Reconstituted Epithalon qualifies for this exemption if you're transporting it for ongoing research that requires continuous sample integrity. The exemption doesn't mean unlimited volume; it means you're not restricted to 3.4 ounces, but you must declare the liquid and allow inspection.
- Carry-on transport is the only viable option for peptides. Checked baggage compartments experience temperature swings between −20°C and 30°C depending on routing and season, and you have zero control over handling conditions. Cargo holds aren't climate-controlled on most domestic flights, and even short-haul flights can expose checked bags to tarmac conditions for 30+ minutes during loading. A peptide stored in checked luggage is effectively uncontrolled inventory. The risk of temperature compromise is near-certain.
- When you declare a research peptide at screening, TSA may swab the container for explosive residue or request that you open the vial for visual inspection. This is standard protocol for any unidentified liquid, not a sign of suspicion. Comply immediately, and if you're concerned about contamination from opening the vial, explain that the sample is sterile and offer to open it only if the officer cannot verify contents through the transparent container. In our experience, most TSA officers are satisfied with external inspection if the vial is clearly labeled and accompanied by documentation.
- One critical distinction: TSA regulations permit research materials, but individual airlines may have additional restrictions for biological substances or temperature-controlled cargo. Verify your carrier's policies before booking. Some international carriers require advance notice for any substance requiring refrigeration, even in carry-on luggage.
