But here’s what you might not hear online: peptides aren’t for everyone. Some people can benefit tremendously, while others could risk making existing health conditions worse.

If you’re thinking about trying peptides, here’s what you need to know before you start.

What Are Peptides, Really?

Peptides are chains of amino acids that act as natural messengers in the body. They support communication between cells and have been reported to help regulate many biological processes. Different peptides are explored for different purposes.

Peptides are tiny chains of amino acids. Your body uses them to send messages, repair tissues, and help with normal hormone activity. Different peptides are linked with different wellness goals.

Some are buzzed about for gut and joint/soft tissue support, some are linked to natural growth hormone signals and recovery routines, and others, like Sermorelin, are often used for sleep, energy, and healthy aging

Peptides have gained popularity recently because they’re created to work with the body’s own systems. Still, some health conditions make peptide use risky.

Who Should Not Use Peptides

1. People with Active Cancer or a History of Tumors

Peptides that are created to affect growth or repair, like many of the most popular options, may not be safe for people who have cancer now or have had it in the past. Anyone in this group should talk with an oncologist before using any peptide. Always consult a doctor or oncologist before starting any growth or regenerative peptide.

2. People with Kidney or Liver Disease

The kidneys and liver help filter and metabolize peptides. If these organs aren’t functioning well, peptides can build up or stress the system.

Many popular peptides have very little research data available for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and while it’s anti-inflammatory, it hasn’t been studied in renal-compromised populations.
If you or a loved one has stage 3 or higher kidney disease, peptides should only be used under direct nephrologist supervision, if at all.

3. People with Uncontrolled Diabetes or Blood Sugar Issues

Peptides like Sermorelin and other HGH-increasing peptides can influence insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation.
Those with uncontrolled diabetes or reactive hypoglycemia should be monitored closely or avoid these therapies altogether.

4. People with Cardiovascular or Vascular Disorders

Some peptides can affect blood flow, fluid retention, or vascular tone.
If you have heart failure, high blood pressure, or a history of blood clots, peptides should only be prescribed after cardiac clearance.

5. People with Autoimmune Conditions

Because peptides can influence immune signaling and inflammation, they can occasionally worsen autoimmune diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
Treatment should be personalized and closely monitored by a medical provider.

6. Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women

Many of the most popular peptides on the market have not been studied for safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding and should be avoided.

Who Might Benefit From Peptides

Many people explore peptides as part of a supervised wellness plan when they want support for recovery routines, sleep quality, daily energy, healthy aging, or joint and digestive comfort. A medical provider should always review your health history to determine if peptides are appropriate for you.

If you have kidney disease, cancer, or other chronic conditions, it’s best to avoid peptides unless prescribed by a medical professional familiar with your full health history.

03What about drug therapy?

Unfortunately, there are no FDA-approved medications for fatty liver disease. So far, the two best drug options affirmed by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases for biopsy-proven NASH are vitamin E (an antioxidant) and pioglitazone (used to treat diabetes). However, not everyone will benefit from these treatments, and there has been some concern about safety and side effects. If you have NASH, it's best to speak to your doctor about whether these treatments are appropriate for you, as they are not for everyone. There are more drugs in the pipeline, some with promising initial study results.
