The current Ebola outbreak

Following recent international concern surrounding Ebola outbreaks in Central Africa, research efforts are increasingly focused on improving immune monitoring, vaccine development, and epitope characterization across different Ebola virus species and strains.

In particular, attention has recently turned to the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain following outbreaks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Unlike Zaire ebolavirus, there are currently no approved vaccines or therapeutics specifically targeting the Bundibugyo strain, highlighting the urgent need for expanded research into cross-reactive immune responses, novel vaccine targets, and improved diagnostic strategies.
