Reusable peptide pens have become an essential tool in many research settings, offering precise and consistent dosing with minimal setup. This guide covers everything researchers need to know about selecting, setting up, and maintaining a peptide pen for laboratory use.

What Is a Peptide Pen?

A reusable peptide pen (also called an injection pen or dial-a-dose pen) is a precision dosing device that uses a dial mechanism to measure exact volumes from a pre-filled cartridge. Unlike drawing from a vial with a syringe — where accuracy depends on reading tiny markings on a barrel — a pen clicks to each dose increment, providing tactile and audible confirmation.

Pen vs Syringe: When to Use Each

Dosing precision

High (click-stop mechanism)

Moderate (visual reading)

Ease of use

Simple dial-and-click

Requires drawing technique

Portability

Compact with travel case

Requires separate vials

Cost per use

Lower (reusable body)

Higher (single-use)

Best for

Repeated same-dose protocols

Variable or one-off dosing

Setting Up Your Peptide Pen

Load the cartridge — Unscrew the pen body and insert a filled 3 mL sterile cartridge containing your reconstituted peptide solution

Attach a needle tip — Thread a pen needle tip onto the pen's threaded end. Needle tips are available in 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm lengths

Prime the pen — Dial to 2 units and press the plunger button with the pen pointing upward. A small drop should appear at the needle tip, confirming air has been expelled

Dial your dose — Turn the dose dial to the required number of units. Each click is one unit

Administer — Press the plunger button fully. Hold for 5-10 seconds before withdrawing

Needle Tip Selection

4mm needles — shortest option, suitable for subcutaneous research protocols

6mm needles — the most commonly used length, balancing comfort and reliable delivery

8mm needles — longest option for deeper subcutaneous protocols

Always replace the needle tip after each use. Reusing needles can introduce contamination and reduces precision due to tip dulling.

Filling Cartridges

To fill a cartridge from a reconstituted peptide vial, draw the solution using a syringe and carefully transfer it into an empty sterile cartridge. Ensure no air bubbles are trapped. For a visual walkthrough, see our pen instructions page.

Storage and Maintenance

Store loaded pens at 2-8°C with the needle tip removed and a cap in place. The peptide pen travel case provides insulated, protective storage for transport. Clean the pen body periodically with an alcohol wipe — do not submerge in liquid.
